Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden is the Dutch national institute for biodiversity and systematics. With our collection of 42 million specimens, one of the world's largest natural history collections, and our state-of-the-art research facilities we offer the (inter)national research infrastructure for species identification and monitoring. We present the history of our planet, and the diversity of life on Earth, through permanent and temporary museum exhibitions, educational programmes and online presence, with more than 500,000 visitors per year.
At Naturalis, we are passionate about providing access to biodiversity information. We do this by building infrastructures for biodiversity data and services for researchers and the wider community. By using innovative technologies in computer vision and bioinformatics to automate species recognition, we can provide more reliable information about biodiversity patterns and trends and help combat biodiversity loss.

As a Data Engineer, you are part of the Biocloud team within the ARISE program. ARISE () is developing a state-of-the-art infrastructure for biodiversity monitoring and species identification. With this infrastructure we will be able to identify all species in the Netherlands from digital media, sensors, and DNA samples.
The ARISE Biocloud team is responsible for developing the underlying infrastructure of the entire ARISE program, which will facilitate acquiring, connecting, standardizing, aggregating, contextualizing and linking data. This includes the architecture, detailed design and development of data management services, integration services for connecting various data sources to ARISE as well as web interfaces and application programming interfaces (APIs) from which the infrastructure and the data services can be accessed.

Do you have the technical skills to enable the automated discovery of biodiversity? In this position, your data engineering skills will help unravel the complexity and reveal the beauty of natural biodiversity. Moreover, your expertise will help to combat the immense challenge of biodiversity decline. We are looking for someone with:
  • Experience with Python, SQL (Apache Spark a nice extra);
  • Experience with Java (nice extra);
  • Experience with development and optimization of ETL/ELT data pipelines;
  • Understanding of data processing in batch and streaming;
  • Basic knowledge of concepts such as Data Lakehouse, Delta Lake and other Big Data concepts, experience with Databricks is a plus;
  • Experience working cloud based. AWS is the currently used cloud;
  • Knowledge of different types of databases, such as SQL, NoSQL, Graph;
  • Foundational experience with DevOps and/or DataOps concepts;
  • Experience with Docker.
In addition to your technical skills, we hope you:
  • Are a team player with a great sense of responsibility and a high degree of independence. You feel comfortable working in a distributed work environment, collaborating with people from different backgrounds and organizations;
  • Enjoy working in an agile setting with a multidisciplinary team;
  • Have a service-oriented attitude with good communication skills;
  • Have at least a BSc in applied sciences or university thinking level (for Dutch applicants, that means at least HBO/WO). Preferably in software engineering or a similar technical study;
  • Have an interest in, and preferably affinity with the community, biodiversity, and the field of natural sciences and biology.
Do you not yet have enough knowledge or experience with one of the technologies or skills mentioned above, but are you eager to learn? Then we offer you the opportunity to develop yourself further to acquire the remaining skills.

We offer a contract (36 hours per week, 32 is possible) for a period of one year, to be extended with one year after a successful first year evaluation.
A monthly gross salary in scale 10 between € 3,468.- and € 4,506.- gross. You also get an allowance for travel expenses, holiday allowance (8%) and year-end bonus (3.4%).
